When my friend told me about some clothing that he pulled out of his closet that had black spots on it, we were both baffled as to what it was. Did he spill something black on it that he forgot? Upon closer inspection, we determined the culprit was mold. Then he remembered he had worn that piece of clothing at the gym. Thinking he could get one more wearing from the item before washing it, he hung it back up in his closet still slightly damp. Now, mold loves a damp dark environment and his closet was just the ticket.
Have you ever stood next to someone with an awfully musty smell? That’s probably the result of not drying their clothing thoroughly. It’s kind of a delicate subject and unless you know the person well, your best bet is to just move on. I have had to do this myself.
Now, back at the moldy clothing ranch, my friend was ready to just toss the garment in the trash. I said whoa, gym clothing is not cheap and I think if you wash it properly, the mold will come out. So, the first thing we did was take it outside and shake out all the visible mold. You don’t want to do this inside as it can spread the mold spores in your home, not a good idea. After letting the item dry in the sum for a while, we then decided to wash it with Oxyclean and white vinegar. Shazam, it was good as new, no more stinky moldy clothing.
